This year I have the privilege of being asked by my pastor to chant the Epistle at Midnight Mass this Christmas. In my search to find any sort of musical notation to assist me, I was frustrated. I had no problem whatsoever finding the music for chanting the Epistle in Latin for the Extraordinary Form. But this was an Ordinary Form Mass and I was to do it in English!
I did find some helpful information on chanting the Epistle in English generally, including this audio file on the Musica Sacra forum, and these written instructions from the ICEL.
The second reading for Midnight Mass is not long (Titus 2:11–14). I know it’s not entirely common to chant the readings before the Gospel at Novus Ordo Masses celebrated in the vernacular. But surely someone’s doing it some of the time — and if there were any time to do it, it would be the Christmas Midnight Mass! So surely someone has pointed this reading to help them chant it. And surely that someone has uploaded a scan of that online somewhere. Surely. Right?
Well, not that I could find. So perhaps I am that someone.
Here you go, cantors and lectors of the world. My gift to you. Merry Christmas!
